
The second part of the catalpa tree series and not a particularly interesting photo, but it gives you an idea of scale. The blossoms are rather small in comparison to the size of the leaves, which kind of remind me of elephant ears. The leaves seem to get larger the larger the trees grows. I think the largest here was seven or eight inches, but at tree maturity they measure eight to twelve inches. The seed pods can grow from 12 to 24 inches long. I couldn’t find any photos in my archives of the pods, but there is a tree down the street that might have some and, if so, I’ll stop and get shot or two. The pods drop their seeds in the spring, so there should still be some attached. Once the two trees in my front yard mature, they will provide excellent shade for the house in summer, growing to 60 feet or so.
