For those who might be new to my blog, I am based in the Columbia Basin of Washington state. I love using natural light to capture agriculture, flowers, and the world around me. I also do portrait and pet photography, as the occasion arises.

Tractors in the sky

August 14, 2009

crop-duster2

As I added in a note on my previous post, some of you have mentioned concern for my safety while I was out photographing the crop duster.  Please do rest assured, I was a safe distance away, well out of the drop zone and using my zoom lens.  The plane really was much further away than it appears.  There was absolutely no wind, no drift; I couldn’t even smell the chemical.  This field is at the edge of town, so whatever they were spraying would have to be safe for the residential neighborhood right across the street from it.

This plane is fairly new.   You can read about this Air Tractor here.  It is manufactured specifically for agricultural use in application of chemicals, fertilizer and seed.  The larger Air Tractors can also be used for fire fighting.  Kind of cool to know that these Air Tractors come with air bags as standard equipment for the pilot’s safety.

You can learn more about crop dusting planes in this Wikipedia article.  Planes aren’t the only thing used for crop dusting.  Helicopters have also been put to use for agricultural applications.

My next post will be on an important topic and since it will occur on Sunday, the Sunday  Spotlight will resume.

you do find the most interesting mechanical subjects to photograph (and well done too i might add) of anyone~*girl* i know. i hope you are feeling better toni!

if anyone takes offense (i don’t think you will toni or i wouldn’t have written it) at the use of “girl” as a pronoun instead of “woman” please know i am as feminist minded as anyone but i do love my ‘girlfriends’. girls refers to the endearing memories of my childhood when hand holding with my girlfriends was a daily thing.
