For those who might be new to my blog, I am based in the Columbia Basin of Washington state. I love using natural light to capture agriculture, flowers, and the world around me. I also do portrait and pet photography, as the occasion arises.

Caboose Thoughts

February 11, 2009

Caboose

by Carl Sandburg

IT’S going to come out all right—do you know?
The sun, the birds, the grass—they know.
They get along—and we’ll get along.

Some days will be rainy and you will sit waiting
And the letter you wait for won’t come,
And I will sit watching the sky tear off gray and gray
And the letter I wait for won’t come.

There will be ac-ci-dents.
I know ac-ci-dents are coming.
Smash-ups, signals wrong, washouts, trestles rotten,
Red and yellow ac-ci-dents.
But somehow and somewhere the end of the run
The train gets put together again
And the caboose and the green tail lights
Fade down the right of way like a new white hope.

For the complete version of Caboose Thoughts, visit American Poems.  This is a close up shot of the caboose posted earlier, which you can see here.  The previous shot was taken with the Lensbaby, while this one was not.  This caboose, with it’s processing, is very different from what I normally do, but I like it.  This was initally processed in Lightroom, exported into Photoshop where I used a Topaz filter plugin, and then finished off with a frame done with Filter Forge.  I thought I’d interject this bit of color before resuming with some more black and white images on Thursday.

Don’t forget, I’ve got a blog anniversary give-away coming up this weekend!

I really like the angle from which this was shot as well as the wonderful processing. Very effective image; perfect accompanying poem.

I love so many things about this image!

First off, the size! It fills my monitor beautifully.

Second, my daughter is loving trains these days and it immediately made me think of her.

Finally, the processing to excellent – great capture!

The pastel colors are unusual for an old train like this. They make for a terrific photo.

you likely guessed I would like this one more since I’m not a LensBaby fan :) Actually I really like the power this image has and that comes mostly from the perspective you took. Nice processing — love to see experimentation. This is so appealing I would think it would make a great framed print in someone’s den, family room, or office … hey a great father’s day present!! Love it.
(oh and I look forward to your spruce shots too)!

Thanks, Diane! Actually my shots aren’t of a spruce, but the water drops that you captured are similar in mine. :)

The faded colors on this is just awesome! I have to agree with Diane on also not being a Lensbaby fan or any type of soft focus. I have only seen a hand full of bloggers that could do these type of shots that were really good and if that is all they do then it gets boring to me after a while. My two cents. This really is a great image. Well done Toni!!
